The Benefits of Simplicity

In Modern Life there are a seemingly endless series of options and avenues. At each turn, life seems to present numerous complications. It becomes hard to resist the allure of doing more things and trying to solve a myriad of problems. However, often we are consciously or unconsciously yearning for a more simple approach to life. If we can make an effort to bring more simplicity into our lives, we will find many benefits arise.
Peace of Mind. Simplicity doesn't necessarily involve living in a Spartan hut. Real simplicity begins in the mind. If we have numerous anxieties and problems it is not possible to have peace of mind. Simplicity means we learn to clear the mind and not allow ourselves to be bombarded by an endless stream of needless thoughts.
Living in the present. Complication in life arises because often we are worrying and planning about the future. We can become so concerned about what may happen tomorrow or next year that we forget to enjoy the present moment. To have one's focus on the here and now, is to encompass life as it is supposed to be. As Sri Chinmoy says: "Simplicity is our natural or conscious awareness of reality."
When we complicate life through our endless planning we bring tomorrow's problems into today. Yet it is always worth remembering that our worries and fears about the future often prove to be groundless.
Avoid Judgement. It is part of human nature to criticise and judge other people. It is very easy to make a long list of complaints and suggestions about other people. But does it help us when we highlight the faults of others? We should feel that we are not responsible for other people's thoughts and behaviour. If we feel it is our bounden duty to change others, there can be no simplicity and peace in our life. Rather than try to change others, let us just try to focus on changing ourselves. Our own weaknesses are probably more than enough to deal with.
Simplicity enables more to be achieved. Simplicity means that we are focused on one thing at a time. Simplicity means we can put all our concentration on just one thing. If we perform an action with no distractions then we can fulfil it quicker and more successfully. Often when we simplify our life we find we can actually achieve more than when we juggled several things at once.
"The simpler we can become, the sooner we shall reach our destination. A life of simplicity is a life of constant progress. It is in simplicity that we can make the fastest progress, progress which is everlasting." 
Simplicity and Beauty. Simplicity is often synonymous with beauty. For example, Zen gardens are at once simple, yet in that simplicity there is a beauty, which appeals to our soul. It is the same with Mother Nature; the essence of nature is its unspoilt beauty. Has man ever been able to improve on the beauty and simplicity of nature?
Be Happy with what we have. As George Bernard Shaw aptly said "There are two tragedies in life. One is not to get your heart's desire; the other is to get it." The nature of desire is that the more we get the more we want. When we get a new car, often after a while we are not satisfied and want to get something better. However real happiness comes when we are content with what we have and are free of desire.

10 Golden Rules for Losing Weight Without Losing Your Mind

Not everyone is good at losing weight. Some of us often need to try harder than others. A lot of factors influence the weight loss process, including age, gender, metabolism rate, diet, and physical activity level. In this post, we have 10 essential weight loss tips that will work, as long as you follow a good diet plan and exercise regime.
1. Do not stress. That's one of the fundamental rules for losing weight. People often believe that spending hours in the gym is enough for losing pounds, which sadly isn't true. You have to avoid over thinking about the entire process.
2. Sleep enough. An adult person needs at least seven hours of sound sleep each day, and this doesn't mean taking small naps. You have to sleep enough so that your body can take the toll of exercises.
3. Don't skip your breakfast. Your breakfast should be the first and most heavy meal of the day because your metabolism rate is at its best. Make sure that you eat the right things, which can include oats, eggs, and fruits.
4. Add some nuts and seeds. Craving for smaller meals and snacks is absolutely normal, but instead of eating cookies and junk food, you can switch to nuts and needs. A spoon of flax or chia seeds is ideal for every meal too. 
5. Hydration is essential. You don't need magic weight loss drinks. Just drink enough water each day, and if possible, opt for vitamin enhanced water. Also known as alkaline water, it can help in regulating the metabolism rate.
6. Ditch sugar. If you cut down sugar intake for a month, you will see some significant changes in your body. Avoid all sorts of food that have any form of refined sugar. Fruits also have sugar and should be taken in moderation.  

7. Don't miss your carbohydrates. People often believe that carbs should be ignored completely, which isn't the ideal thing to do. Ideally, it is best to choose some of the complex carbohydrates, which require more time for digestion. Examples include oats and brown rice.
8. Do more of strength training. If you are extremely focused on losing weight from certain parts of the body, weight training and HIIT workouts are your best choices. Cardio is important, but it shouldn't be the prime concern all the time.
9. Opt for tea, not coffee. A cup of coffee per day won't hurt you for sure, but it is always best to go for teas. Herbal teas, including jasmine, chamomile, green tea, are great for the body and should do wonders to keep you away from aerated drinks and sodas.
10. Focus on long-term results. Weight loss is a process, which takes time. Fad diets and exercise regimes may help in losing a few initial pounds, but the results often don't last. You need to focus on eating right, and there is no reason to skip exercise. Try to lose weight sustainably.
Lastly, make sure that you are not losing your mind to dieting. As long as you have balanced meals, you should do fine.

So, you think it is time for a career change? Follow our nine step career change plan and you'll be well on the way to a more enriching life!
Many people are unhappy in their jobs, but you have made the big decision to change your career. So let's examine some of the reasons you might have decided that a career change is for you.
Perhaps you are looking for a career with a higher salary? Or looking for a career that allows for a better work life balance? You might have become bored with your current responsibilities, and be looking for a more exciting career? Perhaps a career with more travel? Or more opportunities to make a difference? Or you wish to combine your career with broader interests you have in life? Make sure, however, that it is a career change you are seeking, and not just a different employer in the same career.
Whatever the reason, you have made the biggest step of all, which is to decide to make your career change a reality!
So now what? Let's look at a nine point career change action plan for how you might attack your career change!
1) Choosing your new career
Assuming that you would like to use your career change, at least partly, to increase the enjoyment you get from the time you spend working, the first thing to do is to assess what you actually like doing!
2) Skills and experience for your career change
So now you know what you want to get out of your career change. Now you must assess whether you have the right skills and experience to get into your new career.
3) Training for your new career
If completing a career change we easy, all of us would be in our dream careers right now! So what is stopping us? Perhaps it is the additional skills which we need to build to be credible in our new career. Don't think that training, however, is restricted to job-related or academic courses. You can get the skills and experience you need for your career change in many other ways! 

4) Accepting a pay cut for your career change
Perhaps the main reason for your career change is to earn more money? If so, then that's great, but it's always wise to get as much information on your new career to ensure that you will actually earn more money doing it. If, however, your career change is not driven by wanting to achieve more money, you may need to accept a pay cut.
5) Financing your career change
Completing your career change may require a spell without paid employment. As well as tightening your belt, you should also do a thorough review of your financial position, including loans, mortgages and credit cards. By switching credit cards, you may find you can save money and get other benefits!
6) Relocating
Perhaps your main reason for your career change is to relocate to an area with a lower cost of living, or better schooling or a better climate. Even if it isn't, your career change might require a relocation - you won't find many opportunities to be a ski instructor in San Diego, for example!
7) Changing career without changing employer
Before you assume that you will need to leave your current employer to achieve your career change, have a look around and see if your career change goals can be satisfied where you are currently working.
8) Finding a new employer
There are a number of ways to find an employer which every job searcher knows - classified adverts, internet job-boards, employer directories etc. Many jobs, however, are never listed in classified adverts and on job-boards because they are filled as soon as they are announced!
To make sure that you are in with a chance, you must develop a strong network in the career you wish to change to.
9) Refreshing your job-hunting skills
The chances are, if you've been in your current position for a while, that your job-hunting skills could be quite rusty! So take the opportunity to brush up on these skills - you might only get one chance to make your career change successful!
10) Staying flexible to achieve your career change dreams
Finally, now that you've made the biggest step and chosen to pursue a career change, don't rush it! It may take a month or even a year to work out exactly what you want from your career change and to develop the skills, experience and network to get you into the right place within that career. Don't settle for something which is 'almost right' or you'll be going through the whole career change process again!

Everyone Needs Encouragement

When you come into this world you are greeted by people who love you, your mother being the first person. This is both a scary and exciting moment in the sense that you have spent the last nine months in a secure and comfortable place and finally the moment has arrived to take on the world.
As we do this the nostalgia often lingers in our consciousness and then takes a back seat into our subconscious as a memory that never really fades away. There is a reason for this. It is the security, that connection to mother that we always need. This has a deeper level to it and has to do with our connection to the one Spirit that is within everything. This is the true nostalgia that we feel and as our life continues we always have that memory within us. The love that we feel we try to find outside because we are taught that what we need is outside of ourselves. This is not true, however, it is how most people view the world and see their lives.
Encouragement from others is a reminder that we are valued and that we serve a purpose in this world. It takes great strength to stand alone and if the patterns that we are conditioned by do not teach us this paradigm of self-love then it is confusing to feel so alone and unappreciated in the world.
A big part of our life is often spent working and when people invest so much of themselves in a job it is important that they feel that what they are doing and accomplishing is appreciated to some degree. The more it is valued the more the individual will want to do better. This strengthens the feeling of being accepted and brings up a further sense of community and oneness with their fellow man. The end goal being a return to where they began, the womb of creation, where we all came from. This is love, what we are all after and what the foundation for encouragement is.  
When people feel encouraged they feel loved, when they feel loved they feel valued. When they feel valued they are able to let their true self shine through, bettering the world, the people in it and themselves a well.
The harmony that comes from taking a few moments out of your day to acknowledge something positive about another person can work wonders and be just what the person needed. Is it too much to ask? Is it too hard to find something to encourage about another? If it is then ask yourself, do you value yourself? Do you love yourself? Your inner world creates your outer world and if you refuse to compliment or encourage another then quite often you have some deep-rooted issues about self-acceptance that you are ignoring. People are more transparent than they think they are and the mask you hide your true self behind often has cracks and there is only so much glue and makeup that you can cover it with before the cracks come through and are visible, even on the cloudiest of days. Are you picking up what I'm throwing down here? Love yourself and then naturally that love will flow out from you to others as words of encouragement and inspiration. The harmony and productiveness that will come from it will move mountains and help to bring our crippled society into a better place.
Businesses need to invest to grow and prosper, what better investment than to encourage the people that work for you or with you, so that what you have to offer will be the best that it can be because it was made by people who feel valued and worth something.

What Will Make Your Money Stick

I love travelling, but I also super love coming home! Especially to a place I have created that I love and where I feel great! I have been enjoying getting back into my regular self-care routine, working out and drinking green smoothies! No matter how hard I try to eat well, workout and meditate while I travel, I still come home feeling a little off. Managing expectations and realizing I will; A) drink more wine then usual, B) see more people than usual which is fun but does take extra energy, and C) not workout quite as much. Which is ALL okay. Let's cut ourselves an extra break this week in ALL areas of life. 
If you are having trouble getting your money to "stick", meaning it's not such an issue bringing it in, but more making it stay, then you will like this week's article! Read on to learn how to make it stick.
So what's preventing your money from sticking? Well, deep down you still have a block to creating the ultimate success level you desire for yourself. You don't believe you are worthy enough at a deep core level. Want to know a little secret? Most people don't feel good enough. It's the ego. That part of our mind telling us we're not good enough, smart enough, successful enough, etc. That when we hit X level we'll finally have made it and can feel good enough, only to find out we still don't feel good enough when we hit that amount. If we're in that place of never enough, we will never BE enough, thus never creating enough. Many people create "just enough" regardless of the level they reach. We need to become aware of that thinking at the core and start shifting it to a new and empowered thought system.  
What's in your bank account directly reflects how you feel about yourself. Now, the amount you decide on is subjective. You get to decide what you want. Please don't pay any attention to people in this industry saying you have to be at X amount to be successful, or have X amount in the bank. It's up to you how much money you would like to earn and have in your bank account. It all comes down to what feels good and exciting for you. Be mindful of comparisons to others. This is about YOUR best life and no one else's. If you aren't where you want to BE though, there is something else going on at a core level.
I also don't think most people are wired to ask for more than they need. There is some type of guilt going on deep down. Like they will be a bad person if they ask for more. So they are in a perpetual slump of always having "just enough". Just enough to cover their current expenses and nothing more for things like travelling, saving and reaching their BIG lifestyle dreams. Oddly, as their business grows, so do their expenses, and even though they have more money, they still stay in "just enough" mode.
Here are some things to consider in order to break this pattern.
1. Know your numbers! You can't get to where you want to go, if you don't take a good look at where you are. Most business owners shy away from this and it's a huge detriment to their growth. What you track grows (because it's in the forefront of your awareness and focus). If you can look at it without judgment, you can use it just as a gauge as to how things are going. If you take it personally, which most people do meaning it triggers poor feelings about themselves, then you definitely won't want to look at it. Because it doesn't feel good. How can you become empowered with where you are? In Rhonda Byrne's book the Power, she talks about having gratitude for paying your bills and what they have enabled you to do. Saying thank-you to your utility bills and even credit cards! What have opportunities have they allowed you?
2. Know you aren't a bad person. Maybe you've made some poor choices, but look instead at what you have learned and how you can do things differently moving forward. You are in control. This becomes empowering.
3. Pay yourself first! So many people don't do this! They make sure everything and everyone else is covered first! This relates directly back to self-worth. Respect yourself enough to pay yourself first. If you don't take of you, who will? I recommend starting off with 10% of every dollar coming in off the top (gross).
4. Put this money aside in some type of savings that actually earns you money on your investment, and only touch it for appreciating assets. In other words, don't spend it on depreciating assets like things like cars and household emergencies. Another savings account can be set up for those types of expenses if you like. A client of mine calls this type of savings her Freedom Fund, and I just love that! It is helping her create freedom and has made saving a very empowered process as a result. 6 Ways to Change Your Attitude and Change Your Life

We have heard it all the time - "If you change your attitude, you can do much better". Even in school the teachers say - "If you change your attitude, you will get good marks". At work, the boss say - "If you just change your attitude, you will go so far". When the employers are looking to hire people, they are looking for the right attitude. Why is it, that Attitude is so important? What do we really mean by Attitude? And how do we change our Attitude to get better things in our life?
Earl Nightingale, the famous motivational speaker and also known as the "Dean of Personal Development", had called Attitude as the Magic word. He explains in his landmark program Lead the Field, that our Attitude towards the Life determines the Life's Attitude towards us. The Law of Cause and Effect states that every cause has an effect or the result. So if have a poor attitude, we will get poor results. The poor results will reinforce the poor attitude and we get more and more such poor results. On the contrary, if we have a good attitude, we get good results and so does every successful person around us - because they have a good attitude. What we receive from Life, what we accomplish or fail to accomplish is due to our own Attitude.
Napoleon Hill, the famous author of "Think and Grow Rich", once asked Andrew Carnegie, a billionaire from 19th century - "Why is that he is earning so much money, while there are so many people struggling to just get by". Andrew Carnegie replied that it was an Attitude thing that separated him from the masses. He demanded Riches in definite terms, he had a plan to acquire that riches and he executed this plan.
While the Dictionary meaning of Attitude is - manner, disposition, feeling, position, etc., with regard to a person or thing; tendency or orientation, especially of the mind; I like the way Bob Proctor explains Attitude - "Your attitude is the composite of your thoughts, feelings and actions, which in turn produces your results". Now, if you are anything like me, you would read this over and over. Attitude is a composite of Thoughts, Feelings and Actions. When we meet a very nice person, we do not say - "Hey, I like your Thoughts" or "I like that way you feel about life" or "I like the various Actions you take". We just say - "I like your Attitude". As it was explained in the dictionary meaning as well, Attitude is the orientation of the mind. All Thoughts originate in your mind. The Thought causes the Feeling and Feelings provoke you to take Action. Action causes a Reaction / Result. Hence your Attitude has the roots that go deep inside your mind. To change your Attitude, you must begin by changing your Thoughts. 

William James once said - "The greatest discovery of my generation is that human beings can alter their lives by altering their attitudes of mind."
Hence, to have a good Attitude, we must have good thoughts - good thoughts about ourselves, good thoughts about others, and good thoughts irrespective of the circumstances. Attitude is the reflection of a person - What goes inside, shows outside. If we are not good to ourselves and we doubt our capability, we fear to take action and we keep thinking others can achieve but we cannot, we will always have poor thoughts and result in poor attitude. Also, if we think bad about others and find faults in them, we will be generating bad thoughts and as an effect will experience bad results ourselves. These are some of the key things to remember about Attitude:-
- Attitude will determine the Results we get in our Life. Bad Attitude - Bad Results, Good Attitude - Great Results.
- Attitude towards others, will determine their attitude towards us.
- In order to improve our Attitude, we must Think, Act and Talk in the manner as if we already are in possession of the good that we desire.
- Attitude is not a result of Success, it is Success with is a result of good Attitude.
Since our mind can hold 1 thought at a time, we must think constructive thoughts. We can master this by patiently creating a new habit of thinking positive thoughts. Each time we notice ourselves thinking a negative thought or talking with anyone on a negative topic, we should replace it by a positive one. We may be able to do this only 5% of the time and gradually increasing it to 10%, 30%, 70%, 90% and then it would have become a habit.
Here are some simple steps that can develop a good attitude:
1. Understand that we are powerful being and there is tremendous potential and talent within each one of us.
2. Do not waste time in thinking poor thoughts.
3. Look for the best in others. Even if you are upset with him / her, think about 1 thing that is good in them and keep thinking about that thing.
4. Radiate a wellbeing attitude
5. Treat everyone you come in contact with as an important person
6. Last but not least, be alter of new ideas that will flow into you and act on them. 
We are in charge of the Attitude ("Cause"), the Rewards ("Effect") will take care of themselves. Success can be guaranteed, if we live in a Certain Way.

Attitude Is a Big Deal

Attitude has been defined as, "A predisposition or a tendency to respond positively or negatively towards a certain idea, object, person, or situation. Attitude influences an individual's choice of action, and responses to challenges, incentives, and rewards (together called stimuli) - Businessdictionary.com. The site adds that there are four major components of attitude which are "(1) Affective: emotions or feelings. (2) Cognitive: belief or opinions held consciously. (3) Conative: inclination for action. (4) Evaluative: positive or negative response to stimuli." There are essentially two attitudes that persons can have: a good attitude or a bad attitude. There is a misconception in some organizations that the only thing that matters to work success is persons' ability to get the job done. This view does not understand the critical importance of workers having the right attitude.
A bad attitude is responding badly or negatively to something or someone; it involves thinking negatively. How are bad attitudes developed? Bad attitudes develop when people allow themselves to become proud. Pride causes people to have an overinflated opinion of themselves while seeing others as inferior. Pride inevitably leads to a lack of love and respect for others. Proud people also think that they are larger than the organization or the common good. They believe that they are indispensable to the organization, and that they are superior in the execution of their tasks.
Bad attitudes may also be due to improper training. Human Resource managers have begun to recognize the necessity of training to achieving and maintaining competitive advantage. Greater priority is being placed on customer service, which requires workers to have a good attitude to the company, to their coworkers and to the customers. When workers are not trained to prioritize these three areas, as well as be held accountable for them, they are more likely to develop bad attitudes. 
Bad attitudes often come about because of a negative home environment. Many families today are dysfunctional. The product is dysfunctional individuals who are filled with negative emotions such as fear, anxiety, stress and bitterness and who are unable to relate well to people. Homes are characterized by separation and divorce. These do not simply have a traumatic effect on children but also affect the spouses themselves. Families are also characterized by various forms of abuse: physical, verbal, sexual and emotional. There is typically a lack of healthy communication and a lack of healthy core values. It is no wonder then, that when people come into the workforce, they are unable to function effectively. The situation will soon reach a point where companies will have to hire mental and counseling professionals to deal with this deteriorating problem.
Regardless of the source of bad attitudes, all organizations need people with good attitudes. Persons must first have a good attitude toward themselves. Self-love is not the same as narcissism. Persons who love themselves treat themselves with respect and see themselves as persons of value and importance. It is impossible to have a genuinely good attitude to others when you lack a good attitude toward yourself. Further, persons must have a good attitude to others - to their superiors, their subordinates, their coworkers and to the customers. Persons must have a good attitude to their task. They must recognize the importance of the task to the success of the organization. They must be faithful to the task and always look for ways to improve. Persons must also have a good attitude to the organization. If you are dissatisfied with the organization and nothing is changing for the better than the best thing to do is leave. The rule of thumb is like the place where you work or you will be a miserable person throughout your life.
There are a number of positive things that happen when persons have good attitudes. One of the results is better work relationships. People are more willing to cooperate with each other. They tend to work as a team creating an environment of synergy. People look out for each other and spur one another on to better performance. A natural outcome is increased productivity as persons are not carrying around emotional baggage. People are also more focused. Better relationships mean better communication and cooperation, which lead to innovation and problem solving. Persons with good attitudes motivate others.
However, there are a number of negative things that result when an organization has persons with negative attitudes. One of these is low morale: persons are simply not motivated to perform at their best. This inevitably leads to low productivity; in some cases, productivity may simply be below what the organization is truly capable of producing. Bad attitudes result in conflict and division. Persons with bad attitudes are difficult to get along with. They could be too passive, unwilling to do what needs to be done. They can be aggressive, like corporate bullies. Or, they can be passive-aggressive, quietly working behind the scenes to frustrate progress. When persons with bad attitudes are not dealt with, affected persons begin to lose confidence in the leader. They expect the leader to do something and they are frustrated when nothing is done even though everyone knows who the problem person is.
Speaking of leadership, what do you do with people with a bad attitude? Early intervention is important; a classic mistake is to wait until too much damage has been done. Leaders can talk to persons with bad attitudes to assess the root of the problem. The problem may be quite fixable if leaders are willing to deal with it. Leaders can train persons to think differently and to maximize their abilities for the advancing of the organization; mentoring and coaching can help. A proper assessment of individuals may reveal that they are working in the wrong area: a simple transfer, then, may fix the problem. In worst case scenarios, when everything has been tried and has failed, the only other solution is to terminate persons with bad attitudes. Persons with negative attitudes will destroy what leaders are working to accomplish.
There are several right attitudes that should be encouraged. Here are a few. Organizations need persons with a can do attitude. These are individuals who are proactive and are committed to getting things done. There is also a need for persons with a sharing attitude - those who are committed to partnership rather than just working on their own. Greater results are achieved when we work with others. Organizations need persons with a people attitude, persons who have a genuine concern for others. Charitable organizations need persons with a reverent attitude - those who have respect for God and His work. Any organization that is progressive needs persons with an open attitude - those who are open to change. Finally, organizations need persons with a humble/learning attitude - people who are willing to learn. This has to do with the concept of constant improvement.
Let's look at some ways that can help in developing a good attitude. If you have a bad attitude, then you must recognize that you have a bad attitude. I think there will be sufficient clues to let you know that you have a bad attitude! You must not see yourself as indispensable to the organization. This is not to say that you aren't important, but that you must not be so proud to think that you can't be replaced; a little humility goes a long way. Further, practice the Golden Rule - do you want others to treat you the same way you treat others? If not, then treat others with respect and don't do to them what you don't want them to do to you. Further, see the bigger picture - it's not all about you; the organization exists for a reason. Do you know the organization's mission statement? Christians need to cultivate the fruit of the Holy Spirit: these include such qualities as love, joy and peace. Further, see your work/service/ministry as unto God. Finally, deal with the demons of your past - those unresolved issues that block you from having a good attitude. There are mental health professionals and religious ministers who can assist in this area.
Leaders need to recruit people with good attitudes who are talented, not people that are talented with bad attitudes. Sometimes desperation can cause us to use people with poor attitudes. We must always remember that character is more important than talent alone. Bad attitudes will have a detrimental effect on an organization. Good attitudes will have a positive effect.

Everything You Need to Know About Hypnosis for Weight Loss

At first the self-proclaimed foodie was surprised by her hypnotherapist's recommendations. "[She had] four simple agreements to which I would need to adhere: Eat when you're hungry, listen to your body and eat what you crave, stop when you're full, eat slowly and enjoy every mouthful," Georgia explains. "As such, no foods were off limits and I was encouraged to eat everything in moderation—music to my ears!"
Who Should Try Hypnosis
Hypnosis is for anyone looking for a gentle way to lose weight and make healthy eating into a habit. One person it's not for? Anyone interested in a quick fix. Reframing problematic thoughts about food takes time — Georgia says her hypnotherapist eight times over a year and it took a month before she started to notice a real change. "The weight dropped off slowly and surely, without huge changes to my lifestyle. I was still eating out numerous times a week, but often sending plates back with food on them! For the first time ever, I was really tasting my food, spending time to take in flavors and textures. Almost ironically, it was as if I had recommenced my love affair with food, only I was able to lose weight doing so," she says, adding that in between appointments she worked hard to maintain her new healthy habits.
How to Use Hypnosis to Lose Weight
Hypnosis isn't meant to be a "diet" but rather one tool to help you be successful with eating nutritious food and exercising, says Traci Stein, PhD, MPH, a health psychologist ASCH-certified in clinical hypnosis and the former Director of Integrative Medicine in the Department of Surgery at Columbia University. "Hypnosis helps people experience in a multi-sensory way what it feels like when they are strong, fit and in control and to overcome their mental barriers to achieving those goals," she says. "Hypnosis can specifically help people resolve the underlying psychological problems causing them to hate exercise, experience intense cravings, binge at night, or eat mindlessly. It helps them identify the triggers and disarm them."
In fact, it's helpful to not think of hypnosis as a diet at all, says Joshua E. Syna, MA, LCDC, a certified hypnotherapist at the Houston Hypnosis Center. "It works because it changes their way of thinking about food and eating, and it allows them to learn to be more calm and relaxed in their lives. So instead of food and eating being an emotional solution, it becomes an appropriate solution to hunger, and new patterns of behavior are developed that enable the person to deal with emotions and life," he explains. "Hypnosis works for weight loss because it enables the person to separate food and eating from their emotional life."
For people with no other mental health issues Dr. Stein says using at-home self-guided audio programs produced by a qualified hypnotist (look for an ASCH certification) are fine. But beware of all the new apps in the online market — one study found that most apps are untested and often make grandiose claims about their effectiveness that can't be substantiated.
What Hypnosis Feels Like
Forget what you've seen in movies and on stage, therapeutic hypnosis is closer to a therapy session than a circus trick. "Hypnosis is a collaborative experience and the patient should be well-informed and comfortable every step of the way," Dr. Stein says. And for people worried about being tricked into doing something strange or harmful, she adds that even under hypnosis if you really don't want to do something, you won't. "It's just focused attention," she explains. "Everyone naturally goes into light trance states several times a day — think of when you zone out while a friend is sharing every detail of their vacation — and hypnosis is just learning to focus that inward attention in a helpful way."
Dispelling the myth that hypnosis feels weird or scary from the patient's side, Georgia says she always felt very lucid and under control. There were even funny moments like when was told to visualize stepping on the scale and seeing her goal weight. "My overly creative mind had to first imagine myself removing all clothes, every bit of jewelry, my watch, and hair clip before jumping on in the nude. Anyone else do that, or is it just me?" (No, it's not just you Georgia!)
The One Downside of Hypnosis for Weight Loss
It's not invasive, it works well with other weight loss treatments, and doesn't require any pills, powders or other supplements. At the very worst nothing happens, putting it in the "might help, can't hurt" camp. But Dr. Stein acknowledges there is one downside: Price. Costs per hour vary depending on your location but it ranges between $100-$250 dollar an hour for therapeutic hypnosis treatments and when you see the therapist once a week or more for a month or two that can add up fast. And most insurance companies don't cover hypnosis. However, Dr. Stein says if it's used as part of a larger mental health therapy plan it may be covered so check with your provider.
A Surprising Perk of Weight Loss Hypnosis
Hypnosis isn't just a mental thing, there's also a medical component, says Peter LePort, MD, a bariatric surgeon and medical director of MemorialCare Center for Obesity in California. "You must deal with any underlying metabolic or biological causes of weight gain first but while you're doing that using hypnosis can kickstart healthy habits," he says. And there's another healthy perk of using hypnosis: "The meditation aspect can really help reduce stress and increase mindfulness which in turn can help with weight loss," he adds.
So Does Hypnosis Really Work for Weight Loss?
There is a surprising amount of scientific research looking at the effectiveness of hypnosis for weight loss and much of it is positive. One of the original studies, done in 1986, found that overweight women who used a hypnosis program lost 17 pounds, compared to 0.5 pounds for women who were just told to watch what they ate. In the 90's a meta-analysis of hypnosis weight loss research found that subjects who used hypnosis lost more than twice as much weight as those who didn't. And a 2014 study found that women who used hypnosis improved their weight, BMI, eating behavior, and even some aspects of body image. 
But it's not all good news: A 2012 Stanford study found that about a quarter of people simply can't be hypnotized and contrary to popular belief it has nothing to do with their personalities. Rather, some people's brains just don't seem to work that way. "If you're not prone to daydreaming, often find it hard to get engrossed in a book or sit through a movie, and don't consider yourself creative then you may be one of the people for whom hypnosis doesn't work well," Dr. Stein says.
Georgia is definitely one of the success stories. She says it not only helped her lose the extra pounds but also helped her keep them off. Six years later she has happily maintained her weight loss, occasionally checking back in with her hypnotherapist when she needs a refresher.

Developing Success Strategies to Boost Your Career

There are a lot of articles written about success and with so many you would think by now that all of the secrets to attaining it would be known. But it actually indicates something else - there isn't one method that can be applied to everyone. As a career coach I do not claim to offer new secrets; however, what I can teach you are strategies for you to develop that are personal to your career and allow you to create goals. Finding any degree of success begins with a self-awareness of who you are and the purpose that you want to establish for your career. From that point you are able to utilize these strategies or tools that are provided and it will help you create a proactive state of mind that provides better control of your career outcomes.
Does Everyone Want Success?
As a career coach I have found that a majority of people either want to experience some form of success or they want to become successful. When asked for a specific meaning people often refer to something tangible, such as a particular level of wealth, a certain amount of material possessions, or something related to their appearance. The problem with trying to attain those specific indicators is that it can cause frustration if they are not met or accomplished. This can even cause long-term anxiety and lowered self-esteem if it is something they are always trying to pursue and never believe it has been fully met. For those people who become successful they may find that it is not a constant state and if so, the cycle of frustration continues. And there is another type of client who views success from the perspective of having a stable job and a steady income. For anyone who is developing their career, they generally seek to become successful in some manner.
Self-Assessment of Your Career
Before you can develop success strategies you need to assess your career from the perspective of what it means to you so that you can develop a personalized approach. Start with the topic of motivation and consider what drives you, and then decide what you hope to reach for or accomplish with your career. For yourself, consider who you want to become or the person you will be as you progress through jobs and your career. You may also want to consider what you are willing to settle for in your career and the trade-offs you will be willing to make as circumstances change. For example, if you get married and decide to start a family will you have to make concessions in your career?
These questions may seem difficult, and they certainly are, and the point is for you to develop a clear picture of your career so that you can establish direction and goals. This is not to suggest that you should develop long-range and definitive plans. However, you are going to evolve throughout your career - especially as you mature - and the overall purpose is to have you develop a greater sense of who you are, what it is you value, and how you are going to develop a career-minded focus.
Defining Your Career Purpose
Developing a greater sense of self, as it relates to your career, will help you define one of the most important qualities that guides your career and it is the purpose you have established. There are other ways to describe your purpose and includes a calling, personal mission statement, or something you are passionate about and love doing. A purpose gives meaning to your career goals and it can influence your definition of success. For example, you may decide that if you can do the work that you love you will be willing to make concessions along the way.
During the early developmental years of your career this may seem difficult to understand, especially if you are just starting out and it seems your current job is enjoyable. It will likely take time, practice, trial and error, and more than one job to understand your purpose. This also relates to success you have achieved. As an example, if you have experienced success early on in your career it may establish a future expectation; however, that may not be your definitive purpose. For many people, they experience success later in life and that is due to coming into a full realization of who they are and the type of work they want to do.


Developing Success Strategies
#1. Establish Direction
Always have a plan for your career. You know right now whether or not you enjoy your present job. But what will your career look like five years from now? What are your short-term and long-range plans? What is Plan B, if Plan A doesn't align with your interest or what you aspire to become? This step is about learning to become informed and proactive.
#2. Believe in Yourself
It is helpful to view your career from a perspective of hope. This may seem that it borders on positive affirmations but there is more to it. Of course feeling hopeful is always easier when your career is going well. But this step is about having self-confidence in yourself, along with your skills and talents, so that you can be looking for and find new opportunities.
#3. Make Success Personal
Another strategy is to relate your definition of success to what you are in control of now, rather than what someone else may have, so that you can prevent creating a cycle of despair. If you are developing your career, you are confident in yourself and have a strong sense of self, you can attain the goals you have set for yourself. This makes success personal to you.
#4. Learn to Adapt
What can cause barriers in your career progress includes unproductive habits, an unwillingness to learn, and a resistance to change. Every job helps you make decisions about your career and every outcome, whether positive or negative, provides you with feedback. Being adaptive allows you to self-correct along the way and stay on your path to success.
Embracing a Success Mindset
For someone who has developed these success strategies, I will suggest as their career coach that they find someone to use as a role model or someone they can study - to emulate their outlook or perspective of career development. As you study this person consider how they attain success. Was it due to inherited wealth, financial savvy, business acumen, or being in the right place at the right time? Being born into wealth does not guarantee success and neither does coming into financial abundance quickly. You will find that there are a number of lottery winners who wound up broke after the money was all spent because they did not have a success mindset.
But if you study someone who became successful through a well thought out plan you will discover that there is a particular mindset they held as they developed their career. It generally includes an unwavering self-belief and a highly attuned sense of purpose, along with a determination to accomplish their goals. More than likely they pushed past challenges, learned from failures, and worked through setbacks. You will find that stories like this about successful people can also help to inspire you and shape your mindset. There is no magic formula for success. It is up to you to chart your career path and focus on goals that align with your purpose. Decide what being successful means to you and then chart a course. The most effective strategy you can use is one that you believe in and can work towards.
